BUYER BRIEF / QUALITY

IP ratings and water tests: what should a buyer define?

Useful questions before a product direction becomes a purchase order.

A water test is useful only when the test condition, product configuration and intended use are clear. A visible test does not automatically equal a published IP rating.

Start with the real exposure

Rain, splash, spray and temporary immersion create different product requirements. Describe where the light will be used before asking for a rating.

Separate the test from the claim

Ask which product version was tested, how it was configured and what report or standard supports the final claim. The website promise should match the evidence.

Carry the requirement into development

Seals, switches, charging ports, lens assemblies and housing details all affect water resistance. Review them during sampling instead of adding the requirement at the end.
